The Best Entryway Furniture and Décor for the Best Foyer

The foyer is the first area that guests to your home see when they come in the door, so it is important that you make the area welcoming and useful at the same time. Tripping over a pile of bags and shoes, or not having anywhere to put your phone, keys and pocket change can be frustrating, even dangerous. Even if you have a small foyer, you can still add the best entryway furniture and accessories that give you a warm welcome at the end of a long day.

  1. Measure your foyer with the door open before you start shopping for furniture. It is important that you know how far the door opens into the room, because you would not want to buy furniture that will block the door or get damaged each time the door opens.

  2. Buy a table that fits in the space. If you have a large, grand entryway, look for a substantial piece made of heavy wood that suits the space like the Sascha Console Table by Uttermost. For a smaller entryway, like an apartment, a small garden table should still give you space to leave your mail and keys.

  3. Put a bench or chair, like the Nomiya Bench in Stainless Steel by Nuevo Living in the foyer, right next to the table. This will give you a place to sit to remove or put on your shoes. If space is tight, or if you have a busy family, choose a bench with extra storage, as it offers both seating and a place to stash bags and shoes.

  4. If you still have space, add a coat rack like the Umbrella Miami Deco Coat Hat Rack Stand by Adesso. Otherwise, attach hooks to the wall for hanging coats. If you have many coats, hang those that you wear less often in a closet to keep your rack or hooks neat.

  5. Hang a mirror over the table for those lat minute appearance checks. Mirrors also come with the added benefit of reflecting light, so the space appears and feels brighter and even bigger.

  6. Add lighting. A small table lamp offers enough light to keep you from tripping when you come in to a dark house.

  7. Put a durable rug on the floor. If your foyer directly enters into a carpeted area, add a durable welcome mat to catch mud and dirt before it enters the house. Go with a rug that can stand up to regular cleaning, or an inexpensive one that you can replace on a regular basis.

Now that you have worked on the basics, you can now start adding accessories. A basket or bowl on the table can keep keys and pocket change organized. Consider getting a slotted mail organized to keep your incoming and outgoing mail separated, and a small trash can for sorting mail, catching gum wrappers and other trash when you empty your pockets. Keep a basket near the door to hold dog leashes, umbrellas and other items you regularly use.
