Modular Entryway Furniture: Building Cube Furniture

Cube furniture is an excellent piece of modular entryway furniture and storage solution for your foyer. Both decorative and functional, it is a very versatile way to keep clutter at bay. It is especially helpful in foyers and mudrooms as it is mostly these areas of the home where we can expect to see so much mess, from scattered mail to shoes to toys.

Visit an unfinished furniture store or arts and crafts and buy unfinished wood cubes. Typical sizes are single, double, triple and quadruple cubes. Buy as many as you need to build your desired cube furniture piece. Use wood filler to repair gaps or nail holes in the wood. Gently sand the cubes using a low-grade sandpaper to create a rough surface for better paint adherence. Wipe the sanding residue off. Apply two coats of paint, allowing appropriate drying time in between. Once the paint is dry, lightly sand the edges for a rustic shabby chic look. You can also leave it as-is for a modern sleek finish.

Making a Wall Storage Unit

Measure the room and select enough cubes to build an entire wall or storage. Configure the cubes and attach them to one another with screws from the side. Attach the whole unit to the wall into studs for extra stability. Store picture frames, books, office supplies, toys and other decorative items in the cubes. Aside from your foyer, this should also be great for a kids’ bedroom, playroom, library or home office.

Making a Bench with Storage

Put two 4-cube units, one unit on top of the other, so the finished product is a two by four cube configuration. Attach them together from the inside with screws. Put the cube organizer against the wall so it is four inches long and two cubes high. Use the lower cubes for shoes and boots. Put wicker baskets in the upper cubes to hold mudroom clutter. Toss a couple of pillows on top and use as seating for putting on shoes.
